Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11.1.1.9.0 is now available.
The newest version of OBIEE is now available to download from OTN.
The patching and upgrading looks fairly straightforward and I'll let you know what happens and how it happened as soon as I've done the upgrade.
Instructions and documentation on upgrading are available here.
General documentation about 11.1.1.9 is available here.
Until then

Upgrade a Simple install to 11.1.1.7
Upgrading a simple install to 11.1.1.7 from 11.1.1.6.2 BP1
Following on from the previous article on upgrading an enterprise install of OBIEE here's how to do the same for a simple install. Not as straightforward as the upgrade of the enterprise install where it is all wizard driven. For this upgrade you can start out as for the enterprise upgrade for the first couple of steps and then do the rest manually.
As with the enterprise upgrade do a software only install specifying the middleware home that you want patched
Then run the patch set assistant for the MDS and BIPLATFORM schemas. If you do this step manually make sure that you upgrade MDS first.
Now instead of running the configuration wizard, which runs all the steps for you, you will run the following manually.
Assume the following:
the simple install is in the directory C:\obiee11g on windows.our simple install is version 11.1.1.6.2 BP1
1. Upgrade the system components.
cd C:\obiee11g\user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain\binstartweblogic.cmd
(once the server is in the RUNNING state)
set ORACLE_HOME=C:\obiee11g\Oracle_BI1
cd C:\obiee11g\instances\instance1\bin
opmnctl startall
cd c:\obiee11g\Oracle_BI1\opmn\bin

Manually Enabling BI Composer after Upgrade
This is a two step process:
Firstly you need to extend the Weblogic Domain
1. Shutdown all services - Node manager, Adminserver, Managed Server and OPMN.
2. Start the Configuration Wizard for Weblogic (in the Tools Menu)
3. On the initial scree select Extend an Existing Domain.
4. Next, select the location of your existing domain (bifoundation)
5. On the Select Extension Source screen, select Extend my domain using an existing extension template and enter the location of the oracle.bicomposer_template_11.1.1.jar file.
Usually in ORACLE_HOME/common/templates/applications/oracle.bicomposer_template_11.1.1.jar
6. Continue with the remainder of the Configuration Wizard screens to apply this template.
7. After the template is applied, restart all Oracle Instances, the Administration Server, Managed Servers, and Node Manager.
Secondly - Manually Enable BI Composer:
If you run the Configuration Assistant or the Configuration Wizard, then that program installs the files that are required for BI Composer. Before users can run BI Composer, you must manually enable BI Composer using an MBean.
Start enterprise manager http://yourserver:7001/em
To manually enable BI Composer:
Display the Fusion Middleware Control MBean Browser and lock the domain.Navigate to the following folder:
Application Defined MBeans,
oracle.biee.admin,
Domain:bifoundation_domain,
BIDomain.BIInstance.PresentationConfiguration
Locate the following MBean:
oracle.biee.admin:type=BIDomain.BIInstance.PresentationConfiguration,biInstance=coreapplication,group=Service
Set the value of the BIComposerEnabled attribute to "true".
Commit the changes and restart the system.
To use Composer as your report creator.
1. Login as normal to OBIEE analytics.2. Select "My Account"
3. In more recent versions of OBIEE fill in the Wizard radio button in the Analysis Editor section. In older versions of OBIEE you change the Accessibility Mode to ON.
Now when you create a new analysis you will build your "answers" in BI Composer.

OBIEE 11.1.1.7 Upgrade
I have just upgraded a test server from OBIEE 11.1.1.6.2 BP1 to the latest and greatest version 11.1.1.7
After past experiences of upgrade I was half expecting to have no nails left and be pulling my hair out, but this time it went right.
Note: If you are running a simple install, ie. everything runs from port 7001, this whole process will not work for you, and at some stage in the next week or two I'll document exactly what you have to do.
This is for the Enterprise Install only.
2. Run the installer and choose Software only install.
The installer will do a few checks.
Find the default middleware home
Find the weblogic install
and finally start the install.
So that is fairly painless and in about 20 minutes or so you have updated binaries.
3. Select the component to upgrade. (Oracle Business Intelligence)
4. Then, much like most of the GUI installers, fill in the connection details of the MDS and BIPLATFORM schemas.

Patch Set Assistant
1. Navigate to {middleware home}/oracle_common/bin directory
2. Run psa.bat3. Select the component to upgrade. (Oracle Business Intelligence)
4. Then, much like most of the GUI installers, fill in the connection details of the MDS and BIPLATFORM schemas.
5. Once
you verify you have backed up and are running an appropriate version of the database
6. You are asked to upgrade.
Start Weblogic
Now start the Node Manager Service
and, navigate to {middleware_home}\user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain\bin
and run startWebLogic.cmd
When the server is in the running state
Configuration Assistant
1. Start the configuration assistant
{middleware_home}\Oracle_BI1\bin and run config.bat
2. Select the upgrade option
3. Fill in the details to connect to the admin server (usually 7001)
4. And off it goes.
The configuration assistant will do stopping and starting of all the appropriate services at various times and leave you with a updated OBIEE 11.1.1.7
Compared to the previous updates this was easy, but be warned, updating a simple install means that you have to do all the steps covered by the configuration assistant manually.
I'm just getting to grips with the new features and visualisations, and hope to bring you more over the coming weeks.
Update
Here are the manual steps for upgrading a simple install. Please keep me informed of any issues you encounter.

Patching 11.1.1.6 to 11.1.1.6.2
The patch for upgrading to 11.1.1.6.2 is available. Details here.
Pretty much a straightforward upgrade, though a few things to watch out for:
1. Set your environment variables correctly
set ORACLE_HOME=C:\mwhome\Oracle_BI1
set PATH=%ORACLE_HOME%\bin;%PATH%
set JAVA_HOME=%ORACLE_HOME%\jdk
set PATH=%JAVA_HOME%\bin;%PATH%
set PATH=%ORACLE_HOME%\OPatch;%PATH%
2. Make sure you run opatch from the correct directory
Open a command window (with the correct environment variables set - see 1) in the Oracle_BI1 directory.
3. When you come to Part 2. JDeveloper patch 13952743
Unpack the patch into oracle_common.
Change directory to oracle_common
Using the environment variables set in step 1 run
opatch apply 13952743 -OH C:\mwhome\oracle_common
This will patch the oracle_common directory, otherwise the patch reports nothing to upgrade.

11.1.1.6 Released
Just when you lifted your head after getting 11.1.1.5 working after upgrading from 11.1.1.3, along comes OBIEE 11.1.1.6 - released 22 Feb.
Looks like a bunch of goodies under the hood and I'll let you know what I find, but until then check out what some of the other commentators have to say:

time for an upgrade?
Friday, 2 December 2011
Upgrade 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.1.5
Only undertake the OBIEE upgrade if you have fully backed up database and OBIEE install. This is an in-place upgrade that is not for the faint hearted and I would recommend setting a good 2-3 hours aside to finish.
Pre-requisites.
The details in this article only really apply if you are:
1. Running 32 bit Windows Server 2003 and OBIEE 11.1.1.3 with Weblogic 10.3.3
2. You have installed OBIEE 11.1.1.3 in D:\OBIEE11G
You have read the upgrade / patch details on the Oracle Website
You have downloaded the Weblogic patch from Oracle
You have downloaded the OBIEE 11.1.1.5 disks from Oracle and unpacked them correctly.
Step 1.
Shut down all beasvc processes, OPMN and the Oracle Weblogic NodeManager. No processes or threads should be running as services for the next steps.
Step 2.
Upgrade Weblogic using the patch (wls1035_upgrade_win32.exe).
Select "Next" and accept all defaults.
Step 3.
Some settings have not set correctly in D:\OBIEE11G\user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain\bin\setDomainEnv.cmd.
Edit the file and ensure that the correct (new) paths are set for all the JAVA HOMES.
Step 4.
Now will perform a software only install of 11.1.1.5. Start the installer and select software only install, the existing middleware home and defaults for all the other options.
Step 5.
Now we upgrade the MDS and BIPLATFORM schemas. Ensure these are backed up before starting.
From the command line we will now upgrade the database schemas
You will be prompted for the password for SYS and YOUR_BIPLATFORM. Here is the output.
D:\OBIEE11G\Oracle_BI1\bin>psa.bat -dbConnectString strashtdbs043v:1521:tkitt01
-dbaUserName sys -schemaUserName TEST_BIPLATFORM

The command completed successfully
Step 6.
Now we will upgrade the system components. Open a seperate command window and
cd d:\OBIEE11G\user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain\bin
startWebLogic.cmd
Once Weblogic has started the following commands can be run:
cd d:\OBIEE11G\Oracle_BI1\opmn\bin
set ORACLE_HOME=d:\OBIEE11G\Oracle_BI1
upgradenonj2eeapp.bat -oracleInstance d:\OBIEE11G\instances\instance1 -adminHost localhost -adminPort 7001 -adminUsername weblogic
Replace the "localhost" with your machine name, and you should have an output similar to the following. You will be prompted for the weblogic adminuser password a couple of times as the instance is re-registered.
D:\OBIEE11G\Oracle_BI1\opmn\bin>upgradenonj2eeapp.bat -oracleInstance d:\OBIEE11G\instances\instance1 -adminHost xxxxxxxxxx -adminPort 7001 -adminUsername weblogic

Step 8
Upgrade the Oracle BI Presentation Server Catalog
With the presentation server down we will do an upgrade of the catalog. First we have to edit the instanceconfig.xml file to force an upgrade.
Edit the file and ensure that the correct (new) paths are set for all the JAVA HOMES.
set BEA_JAVA_HOME=D:\OBIEE11G\jrockit_160_24_D1.1.2-4
set SUN_JAVA_HOME=D:\OBIEE11G\jdk160_24
if "%JAVA_VENDOR%"=="Oracle" (
set JAVA_HOME=%BEA_JAVA_HOME%
) else (
if "%JAVA_VENDOR%"=="Sun" (
set JAVA_HOME=%SUN_JAVA_HOME%
) else (
set JAVA_VENDOR=Oracle
set JAVA_HOME=D:\OBIEE11G\jrockit_160_24_D1.1.2-4
)
)
Step 4.
Now will perform a software only install of 11.1.1.5. Start the installer and select software only install, the existing middleware home and defaults for all the other options.
Step 5.
Now we upgrade the MDS and BIPLATFORM schemas. Ensure these are backed up before starting.
From the command line we will now upgrade the database schemas
cd D:\OBIEE11G\Oracle_BI1\bin
psa.bat -dbConnectString localhost:1521:dbname -dbaUserName sys -schemaUserName YOUR_BIPLATFORM
psa.bat -dbConnectString localhost:1521:dbname -dbaUserName sys -schemaUserName YOUR_BIPLATFORM
You will be prompted for the password for SYS and YOUR_BIPLATFORM. Here is the output.
D:\OBIEE11G\Oracle_BI1\bin>psa.bat -dbConnectString strashtdbs043v:1521:tkitt01
-dbaUserName sys -schemaUserName TEST_BIPLATFORM

The command completed successfully
The we upgrade the MDS schema in a similar fashion.
psa.bat -dbConnectString localhost:1521:dbname-dbaUserName sys -schemaUserName YOUR_MDS
Once again you will be prompted for the SYS and MDS password.

<ps:Catalog xmlns:ps="oracle.bi.presentation.services/config/v1.1">
<ps:UpgradeAndExit>false</ps:UpgradeAndExit>
</ps:Catalog>
to
<ps:Catalog xmlns:ps="oracle.bi.presentation.services/config/v1.1"> <ps:UpgradeAndExit>true</ps:UpgradeAndExit> </ps:Catalog>
Start the presentation service and then edit the instanceconfig.xml back to its original 'false' setting.
Now reboot to test that all your services come up as expected.
Good luck and let me know how you get on.
